In the fifteenth and final episode of De Illustere Universiteit, the Athenaeum Illustre evolves into the University of Amsterdam. Thanks to the political resolve of former Professor of Law Gijsbert van Tienhoven (1841–1914), together with the new Higher Education Act of 1876, Amsterdam succeeded in realising a centuries old ambition.
