Folia.nl is a publication of the Folia Civitatis Foundation. Stichting Folia Civitatis (hereinafter Folia) handles data of users of its website and other services with care. Personal data will be treated in line with the General Data Protection Regulation and other applicable laws and regulations.
Purposes of collection
Folia uses personal data for various purposes:
1. Sending you an e-mail confirming your response to Folia.nl. You consent to this by using our response system.
2. Sending our newsletters so that you are always informed. You give permission for this by subscribing to our newsletter list.
3. To better understand our readers. Based on the information Google Analytics provides us, we try to better tailor our messaging, our expressions on social media and our website to your needs.
Data
Response system
When you want to respond to Folia.nl, we receive your name and your email address. You consent to the processing of personal data by submitting a response. This data may be used by Stichting Folia Civitatis to get in touch with those who share the contact details or to verify your identity. This data is stored on our server, which is hosted by Combell. They will not access this data without prior consent from the editor-in-chief of Folia. These data are accessible to our chief editor, the editorial director of Folia, the video editor and the editors of Folia. They are not accessible to students, interns, the UvA or other third parties, with the exception of our site's design agency: Verve Agency.
Email addresses provided through the response system after the General Data Protection Regulation (May 25, 2018) comes into effect will not be kept for more than six months. Mail addresses previously provided were removed from our systems by November 25, 2018.
If you do not provide this information, you can continue to use this site. You will just not be able to respond.
Newsletter
To send our newsletters, we use Mailchimp, a service of The Rocket Science Group LLC. To do so, The Rocket Science Group LLC collects some personal information, including your e-mail address, your location, what device and browser you are using, and - if you enter it yourself - your name. These are used to send the newsletter and to improve future newsletters.
This data is stored on servers located in the United States of America. The Rocket Science Group LLC must provide this information when The Rocket Science Group LLC is legally required to do so by a U.S. court. By signing up for our newsletter, you consent to the processing of information by The Rocket Science Group LLC as indicated above.
Email addresses and other personal data that you provide to us for sending the newsletter and we will retain for up to six months after you unsubscribe from our newsletters.
Folia entered into a processing agreement with The Rocket Science Group LLC in this regard on April 9, 2018.

Folia.nl makes use of cookies. Cookies are small text files placed on your computer, phone, tablet or other device by an Internet page. Folia uses functional cookies to optimize the functionality of certain pages, to increase user-friendliness and to keep track of visitor data.

Folia uses Google Analytics 4, a service provided by Google. To do so, Google uses cookies on this site. The information thereby collected by Google, including IP addresses, device information and location data, is stored on servers located in the United States of America. Google must provide this information when Google is legally required to do so by a U.S. court. By using this website, you consent to the setting of cookies by Google and to the processing of information by Google as indicated above. Folia uses Google Analytics as privacy-friendly as possible, in accordance with the manual of the Personal Data Authority. We mask the last octet of the IP address, do not share data with Google that is not necessary for the analysis of the visit of Folia.nl and do not use other Google services in combination with the Google Analytics cookies. In addition, we use the shortest possible retention period for personal data in Analytics: 14 months.

MyFonts
Folia uses MyFonts Counter, a service of MyFonts Incorporated. MyFonts Counter tracks the number of pageviews of Folia.nl, because Folia.nl uses a license of a font from MyFonts. Based on the number of pageviews, it calculates the cost of the license Folia has to pay for it. MyFonts Inc. is based in the United States of America and therefore bound by U.S. privacy laws. It acts in accordance with the AVG in that it invokes "the protection of the legitimate interests of the controller" from Article 6(1)(f). It does not retain data for longer than 30 days. By using this website, you consent to the setting of cookies by MyFonts Inc. and to the processing of information by MyFonts Inc. as indicated above.
Embedded Content
Folia sometimes posts content from other sites, called embedded content, because those sites offer features that our site does not. This includes videos from YouTube, infographics from Infogram or scrollable documents from Scribd. These parties in some cases also set cookies when you open the content or access the page on which this content is embedded. These cookies are necessary to properly present the embedded content and thus necessary for the proper and complete functioning of the multimedia site that Folia.nl aims to be. We take the utmost care in choosing platforms from which we embed content.
Refusing or deleting cookies
Visitors can control how cookies are handled. This can be done by changing browser settings or by downloading add-ons, which can (partially) block cookies.

Minors
Folia does not intend to collect data on visitors under the age of 16. However, we do not have the ability to verify the age of visitors to Folia.nl. If you believe that we have collected personal information about a minor without parental consent, please contact us at dirk@folia.nl so that we can delete this information.
Inspection, rectification, erasure, objection and complaints
All persons have the right to inspect, rectify or so-called erase this data, insofar as the journalistic exception in the General Data Protection Regulation Implementation Act does not prevent this. If you would like access, rectification or erasure, you can request it by sending an email to redactie@folia.nl.
You can object to the processing of personal data by sending an email to redactie@folia.nl.
You can also file a complaint with the Personal Data Authority. You can do so on the site of the AP.
Third parties
Data provided by users to Stichting Folia Civitatis will not be shared with third parties other than those listed above, unless a court order is issued to that effect.
Advertisements
Folia.nl does not use interest-based advertising or ads based on surfing behavior or interests.

Although we select links from Folia.nl to other websites with great care, we cannot bear any responsibility with regard to the use of data by other organizations.
Changes
Stichting Folia Civitatis reserves the right to modify this privacy statement.
