Podcast | How is Airbnb trying to influence tourism policy in Amsterdam? (Dutch spoken)

Jip Koene Jip Koene,
the day before yesterday - 09:19

Two of the biggest challenges facing Amsterdam are the acute housing shortage and overtourism. Airbnb sits at the intersection of these two issues. In the latest episode of the Folia podcast Uitgedokterd, urban researcher Jelke Bosma discusses the criticism levelled at Airbnb and how the platform is trying to maintain its image in an ever-changing city. Listen to and watch the episode now on Spotify or YouTube.

For his PhD research, urban researcher Jelke Bosma spent time with dozens of Airbnb hosts, pored over hundreds of pages of policy documents from the municipalities of Amsterdam and Berlin, and scrutinised Airbnb’s business strategy over the past decade. This gave Bosma an insight into the amount of work involved in renting out accommodation on Airbnb, and how the platform is attempting to influence tourism policy in Amsterdam and Berlin.

In the latest episode of the Folia podcast ‘Uitgedokterd’, he explains what has changed over the past decade for Airbnb and the City of Amsterdam, and warns of the impact that increasing the tourist tax could have on Amsterdam’s accessibility.
