The relocation of UvA departments from the Maagdenhuis to the Roeterseiland Campus will continue until at least the end of 2027. The university announced this in a post on its staff page, which also provides further details about the reshuffling of office space at REC. The UvA had previously aimed to complete the move in the first quarter of next year.
The major relocation operation to move UvA staff from the Maagdenhuis to the Roeterseiland Campus (REC) is gradually taking shape. The original “preferred scenario”, under which the move would have been carried out in the first few months of 2027, is no longer feasible. Instead, the university is now aiming to complete the relocation by the end of next year.
The relocations needed to make room for Maagdenhuis staff are closely interconnected: “A space only becomes available once the previous move has been completed,” the UvA writes. This means that several departments will first have to move within the Roeterseiland Campus to make room for the “Maagdenhuis occupants”. Under the current plans, the REC-based units of On Campus, Workplace Support, the University Library and the editorial team of Folia will move to new locations on the Roeterseiland Campus between April and June.
In the summer
During the summer, the next departments will relocate. The Communications Office will move from the Maagdenhuis to the tenth floor of the A building, which the Faculty of Law will have vacated. The Services Hub (REC A) and Student Services (possibly within the J/K building) will also move to new premises on REC during the same period. A suitable location is still being sought for the Teaching & Learning Centre (TLC) and Accommodation Development (HO).
Once all these preparatory moves have been completed by the end of 2027, the Executive Board’s central administration will finally move into the largely vacated J/K building. It will occupy parts of the first, second and third floors.
The UvA writes that the project involves “many interdependencies”, meaning the schedule may still change. The university expects to present a more concrete plan in early 2027.
