“Significant noise nuisance” due to demolition and structural work on J/K sports centre

During the summer months, there will be “significant noise nuisance” in building J/K of the REC. During this period, the contractor will begin demolition and structural work on the new sports centre, which is scheduled to open in early 2027.

The tender for the new gym in the basement of building J/K has been completed, a contractor has been found and the plans for the gym are taking shape. This is good news for sports enthusiasts, but there is still some time to wait. The UvA expects that there will be “considerable noise nuisance” during the summer months as a result of demolition and structural work in the basement of the building where the gym will be built. Parts of the building will be “unsuitable for use” this summer, according to the UvA.

The noise pollution will not be equally severe everywhere: the upper floors will experience much less disturbance. Noise measurements have been carried out, on the basis of which the UvA expects the contact noise transmission there to be around 37dB, which is considered fairly quiet.

The J/K building on the Roeterseilandcampus (REC) was completely renovated in the period 22|24: it now houses many (smaller) lecture halls, a coffee bar, workplace support and the Student Services department. A sports centre and fitness facility that can be used by the entire campus was still missing.

This will now be added: the (windowless) basement will offer facilities for cardio, strength training, Pilates, yoga, high-intensity training (HIT), et cetera. Of course, there will also be changing rooms, showers and lockers. The centre is set to open in early 2027. By that time, the renovated courtyard garden of the building will also be ready.
