Student council elections nominations open this week

It is April and that means the annual student council elections are approaching once again. Starting this week, students and parties can register with the central electoral committee of the UvA if they wish to stand for election. Nominations are open until 15 April.

The central electoral committee of the UvA has opened nominations for next month’s student council elections. Students can stand for election on behalf of an existing party or set up a new party themselves. The number of parties that participate varies each year, but across the UvA there are usually between twelve and sixteen parties. They can run at the faculty level with a list for one of the faculty student councils, or at the central level for the central student council or both.

A few years ago, the party ‘Slaafs. Eerlijk, simpel, bier’ (Slavishly. Honestly, simply, beer) participated. Last year, the party ‘Fuck this party’ fulfilled a funny role

Fuck

Students who feel at home with a particular party can join that party and run for a place on the list. Those who do not feel at home with any party but would still like to be elected can also found a party and participate. Every year there are new parties – with or without a funny name – that sometimes only participate once, but sometimes also last for years. A few years ago, the party ‘Slaafs. Eerlijk, simpel, bier’ (Slavishly. Honestly, simply, beer) participated in the Faculty of Science. Last year, the party ‘Fuck this party’ fulfilled a funny role. Anyone who wants to found a student party that meets the UvA requirements can do so here.

Language skills

Candidates should bear in mind that the UvA prefers a parallel language policy in which you are expected to have either active English and (passive) Dutch at B1 level, or vice versa. If your knowledge of Dutch or English is insufficient and you still decide to stand for election and are elected, you will have to follow a language course. If you want to participate in the elections with a party, go here.

Just like in real life, the elections are directed by the central electoral committee of the UvA. The electoral committee establishes the electoral register, ensures that all those eligible to vote are on the electoral register, decides on the legal validity of the submitted candidate lists, supervises the orderly conduct of the elections and determines the election results. For the record: all UvA students have the right to vote for both the CSR and the faculty council of the faculty or faculties where they are enrolled.

The student council elections will take place this year from 9 to 16 May.
