The Singel University Library and P.C. Hoofthuis Library will close for good at the end of June

The Singel University Library will close its doors for good on 30 June, while the P.C. Hoofthuis library will close two weeks earlier. This will be the start of a major move to the brand-new University Library on the BG site, now called the University Quarter. On Monday 1 September, the new University Library will finally open.

Few UvA projects have taken as long as the realisation of the new University Library, but after more than twenty-five years of talking, thinking, drawing, arguing (with the neighbours), procedures and finally renovating and building, the new University Library is finally almost finished, many millions of euro’s further. You could say: it has cost a lot, but then you also get a lot. The project is in its final phase and will open to the public on Monday 1 September: students, staff and library visitors.

The opening of the new University Library is looming. This means that the Singel University Library will close on 30 June and the P.C. Hoofthuis Library on 16 June. The physical collections at both locations will no longer be available due to the move to the new location. Anyone who was planning to prepare for exams or resits at the Singel or in the Spuistraat or pick up books on the spot will be disappointed: until 1 September, everyone will have to make do with alternative study places and pick-up locations. The UvA recommends planning ahead when it comes to reserving and picking up books. Printed (non-lendable) collections will not be accessible during the move.

The new University Library combines study with Amsterdam’s historical heritage

The facade of the new University Library features a line from the poem Awater by the poet Martinus Nijhoff, translated into the 24 languages studied at the UvA. The new University Library combines study with Amsterdam’s historical heritage. The building, originally one of Amsterdam’s two academic hospitals, has been transformed based on research and input from students, local residents and heritage organisations.

Prior to the opening on 1 September, new first-year students can get acquainted with the new library: the annual student fair for first-year students, part of Intreeweek, will take place on 26 August in the new University Library.
