The planned demonstration tonight at the ABC building may not take place there by the UvA because of the expected “large numbers of visitors” from outside the university. The UvA has designated Building-E or the bridge over the Nieuwe Achtergracht as a location, but the protesters do not agree.
Via the Instagram page Amsterdam Encampment, a so-called ‘die-in’ was announced this week, which would take place in the hall of the ABC building on the Roeterseiland campus. Activities of the Masterweek are also taking place there.
The protesters want to let future and new master’s students know that the UvA is “complicit” in the occupation of Palestine. They again demand that the UvA cut ties with Israeli institutions.
Precisely because of the master's week taking place this week in the ABC building and education on campus, the UvA says a “demonstration in the hall will be too disruptive”, also because large numbers of visitors from outside the university are expected. This will have an impact on security, the UvA fears. Therefore, the demonstration in the hall of the ABC building may not take place.
Because the UvA considers it important that “students, staff and others within the UvA community can make their voices heard and draw attention to social issues”, the hall of building-E has been designated as a demonstration location. Outside, on the bridge over the Nieuwe Achhtergracht, a protest is also allowed.
But the protesters do not agree to this, according to a spokesperson of the protesters, who says that the original plan will be kept and the planned die-in will take place in the ABC building. “The UvA is afraid the demonstration will be disruptive, but that is in fact the intention of the protest.”
