On Tuesday night, pro-Palestine protesters defaced Roeterseiland building ABC again. The windows of the building's entrance were also heavily damaged. The UvA is pressing charges.
On the night from Tuesday to Wednesday, pro-Palestine demonstrators sprayed graffiti on the side of the Roeterseiland building ABC. Large ‘genocide’ could be read there. The protesters also smashed the windows of the building's entrance. Three hefty impacts could be seen. The accompanying text ‘blood’ written in red was removed by cleaners around 8.15 am, along with the other daubings.
Charges
The UvA has since reported the vandalism. The Roeterseiland building ABC was also defaced during the May 2024 pro-Palestine demonstrations and in the period after. No windows were smashed before. That did happen at Amsterdam University College in April and March this year. The UvA also reported those earlier acts of vandalism. So far, no one has been prosecuted for the graffiti.
Pro-Palestine demonstrators are still outraged by the UvA’s collaborations with Israeli institutions, mainly universities. Their call to break those ties led them to occupy the Roeterseiland campus, including this ABC building on 13 May, and the Binnengasthuisterrein in May this year. The UvA is reviewing the ethical framework around collaborations with third parties this year, but has not yet suspended cooperation with Israeli institutions.
