Afpissen, thuis-thuis, zeester: what do Dutch students actually mean when they say this? To get you settled into student life, Folia produced a special abbreviation list.

A

afpissen - to cancel a plan 

AVG -  a famous ‘recipe’ among students: potatoes, meat, veggies 

 

B

bakken vouwen - drinking beer

bek peddelen - kissing 

blik trekken - gaining a medal, especially in rowing

bopla - charcuterie board

bruine fruitschaal - typical Dutch deep-fried appetizers

bvo - beer to go

 

C

CvB - the Board of the university

cv-neuker - someone who undertakes all kind of activities, just to put them on the resume

 

D

desma - decaf espresso martini

dies - dies natalis, the birthday of the university

 

E

esma - espresso martini

eventuela - someone you could have a relationship with

exclu - exclusive (in dating)

 

F

feut - someone who just joined a fraternity or sorority

 

G

gesalu - having a nice lunch together

glimi - lube

grondpizza - puke

 

hg - roommate

hospi - a night hosted by students to check out potential new roommates

huighockeyen - kissing

itakru - Italian herbs and spcies

icen - hiding a bottle of Smirnoff Ice for someone, then having them to drink the bottle in one go

icri - identity crisis

kaal - drunk

kingsen - drinking game with cards

kladiladi - close that laptop

mossen - having sex

natte tosti - someone who think a little bit too much of theirselves

 

P

pandapunten - points that indicate how long you have not had sex

perbo - personal discount (at supermarket Albert Heijn)

p.h.p.d. - a little bit of pain here,  a little bit of pain there

rattentaxi nemen - to leave without saying goodbye

REC - the Roeterseiland Campus

sbm - sisters before misters

schara - shamelessly urban, often used to describe the 'Havermelkelite' for example (see page X)

skeer - shabby or broke

spebi - specialty beer

sponti - spontaneous

straaljager - gin with bitter lemon

strepen - throwing plastic cups on other people who are drinking

sumogegigo -''super mooi gezopen gisteren, gozer"
