Executive Board to leave Maagdenhuis in November

The time has come: after more than fifty years, the Executive Board of the UvA is leaving the Maagdenhuis. From the end of November, the Board will be based at the Roeterseiland Campus and the Amstel Campus. Workspaces are currently being set up on both campuses for the five board members, including their secretarial staff.

This was announced today by Executive Board Chair Geert ten Dam. Ten Dam: “The Executive Board has long wanted to work closer to the primary process. That is why we will soon be moving to the campuses, so that we can be more connected with the students and staff of UvA and HvA. This approach is in line with the transition initiated by the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences and the UvA’s ten-point plan.”

Staff departments

Ten Dam has indicated that he also considers it important that the supporting staff and policy departments, which are currently located in the Maagdenhuis and another building on Spui, will in future work closer to education and research, just like the Executive Board. “A project group will therefore be set up to work out the details of the relocation of staff and policy departments and to submit a proposal as soon as possible.”

From D6 to E9

As far as the Roeterseiland is concerned, the Executive Board will move into the sixth floor, building section D6, where a wall has since been removed to create a passageway. This section currently houses the front and back offices of the Department of Pedagogy, Educational Sciences and Teacher Training (POWL), a department where Ten Dam worked before her appointment as chair of the Executive Board.

According to employees of that department, they will be relocated to building E, floor 9, which currently houses the Student Services department. According to Student Services staff, that department will be relocated in its entirety to building C. Until recently, there was talk of merging the SS departments of the UvA and HvA on the Roeterseiland campus, but this no longer seems appropriate now that the management of the UvA and HvA is being split. A spokesperson for the HvA has stated that it is not yet known where the HvA’s Executive Board will be located on the Amstel Campus.

Split of the Executive Board

As long as the UvA and HvA still have a joint Executive Board, the Board members will alternate between the Roeterseiland Campus and the Amstel Campus. After the split, the UvA board will remain at the Roeterseiland Campus and the HvA board at the Amstel Campus. The same is expected to apply to the staff and policy departments.
