Maagdenhuisbezetting van vandaag duidt opnieuw op het falen van het UvA-bestuur
Vanochtend werd het Maagdenhuis voor de zoveelste keer bezet. De bezetters eisen dat het College van Bestuur (CvB) openheid geeft over alle institutionele banden met Israëlische academische instellingen, deze banden per direct verbreekt, en afstand neemt van bedrijven die profiteren van de genocide in Palestina. Voor UvA Staff for Palestina blijft het UvA-bestuur ‘wederom’ in gebreke, vinden Jef Ausloos, Sruti Bala, Brian Droop en Marina Tulin.
Sinds oktober 2023 eisen studentenbewegingen en protestkampen over de hele wereld dat universiteiten alle banden verbreken met Israëlische universiteiten, instellingen en bedrijven die medeplichtig zijn aan mensenrechtenschendingen. Ook aan de UvA hebben studenten en medewerkers talloze acties ondernomen: teach-ins, demonstraties, brieven aan het CvB en decanen, en petities met handtekeningen. Als medewerkers hebben wij meegedaan aan rondetafelgesprekken en consultaties over nieuwe huisregels en een ethisch kader voor samenwerkingen met externe partijen. Bovendien organiseren wij sinds enkele maanden elke donderdag tussen 12:30 en 13:00 uur sit-ins op Roeterseiland en op Science Park, om te protesteren tegen de medeplichtigheid van de UvA aan ernstige mensenrechtenschendingen en misdaden tegen de menselijkheid. In december gingen meer dan 300 medewerkers vier dagen in staking, onder leiding van de FNV, om druk uit te oefenen op het CvB om te stoppen met het uitstellen en vertragen van de ethische kaderevaluaties van banden met medeplichtige Israëlische universiteiten.
Na meer dan een jaar van uitstel besloot het CvB uiteindelijk het studentenuitwisselingsprogramma met Hebrew University stop te zetten, vanwege diens betrokkenheid bij ernstige mensenrechtenschendingen en het ondermijnen van academische vrijheid. Dit was een kleine stap in de goede richting, maar beslist onvoldoende. Het CvB onderhoudt namelijk nog steeds talrijke andere institutionele banden.
Banden herstellen
Sterker nog: het CvB heeft recent aangekondigd de banden met Hebrew University te willen herstellen - een instelling waarvan de campus is gebouwd op illegaal bezet gebied. Dit is opnieuw een duidelijk voorbeeld van het falende leiderschap van het CvB. Oneerlijke onderhandelingen, performatieve ‘dialogen’, systematische repressie op de campus, en het uitblijven van een veroordeling van disproportioneel politiegeweld en de criminalisering van studenten en collega’s hebben het vertrouwen in het bestuur volledig ondermijnd.
De Maagdenhuisbezetting van vandaag is een voortzetting van 1,5 jaar acties van UvA-studenten en medewerkers tegen de medeplichtigheid van onze universiteit aan de genocide in Palestina. De bezetting is een krachtig signaal dat het CvB tot nu toe veel te weinig en veel te laat heeft gedaan.
Wij roepen het College van Bestuur dringend op om verantwoordelijkheid te nemen en de kant van het internationaal recht te kiezen. Dit betekent: gehoor geven aan de eisen van studenten en alle banden met Israëlische instellingen onmiddellijk verbreken.
