Louise Gunning, chair of the Executive Board of the UvA and of Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences (HvA), has resigned. The UvA has just announced this. She does not wish to speak to the press.
In recent weeks, members of De Nieuwe Universiteit, Rethink UvA and other academics have repeatedly called for the resignation of the chair of the Executive Board. After the employee participation bodies indicated on Friday that they had no confidence that the Executive Board, in its current composition, could continue to lead the UvA during this difficult period, the situation became very delicate for the Executive Board. The Supervisory Board had to consider the issue of confidence.
Gunning-Schepers has been chair of the Executive Board of the UvA and the HvA since 2012. Before becoming chair of the Executive Board, she was chair of the National Health Council and dean of the Faculty of Medicine at the Amsterdam Medical Centre. Gunning was due to retire in about a year and a half.
The Supervisory Board expresses its great appreciation for her “tireless dedication to both institutions”. According to the Supervisory Board, she has significantly strengthened the position of both the UvA and the HvA in the Netherlands and abroad. Gunning has been committed to internationalisation and excellence. The Supervisory Board will seek a “broadly supported solution” for her departure as soon as possible.
