Football-loving students face a dilemma tonight: do you choose a good night’s sleep, or do you set your alarm for the World Cup match between the Netherlands and Morocco? Those who decide they would rather cheer for Oranje in the middle of the night can head to one of these student cafés.

The academic year is drawing to a close and exam week is finally over. In that respect, the stars are aligned rather favourably for students planning to set their alarm for the Netherlands v Morocco match tonight. But then comes the next question: where are you going to watch? Although the World Cup fixture takes place in the middle of the night – kick-off is at 3 o’clock in the morning – there are fortunately plenty of options.

At student café Fest, for example, the World Cup is being celebrated in style this summer. All matches involving the Dutch national team are being shown, including tonight’s game. At the bar on the HvA’s Amstelcampus, everyone will be hoping for plenty of goals: for every goal scored by the Netherlands, pitchers of beer become one euro cheaper.

“Make sure you’re well rested, because this will be one of those nights you’ll never forget”

Pyjama Party
At Il Caffè, the student bar at Uilenstede, a full-blown pyjama party is on the programme tonight. “Put on your most orange pyjamas,” the café urges on social media. Anyone wanting to attend does need to sign up in advance; due to the crowds during previous matches, a large turnout is expected again. There is also a special World Cup deal here: a beer for €2.50.

Skatecafé may not be a student bar, but among students the venue in Amsterdam-Noord has become particularly popular in recent years. Tonight, the café is opening specially to show the Netherlands match on big screens. Entry is free, and the advice to all night owls is: “Make sure you’re well rested, because this will be one of those nights you’ll never forget.”

At Studio/K, the doors will remain closed tonight. The student cinema in Amsterdam-Oost did screen previous Oranje matches and may do so again if the Netherlands progress further in the tournament. The same goes for student café Crea on the Roeterseiland campus, which will also not be showing the match. Kriterion is closed as well.
