The Dutch meteorological institute (KNMI) has issued a code red warning for Friday due to extreme heat, with temperatures potentially reaching 40°C. The warning also has consequences for the UvA: most teaching activities will be cancelled and outdoor activities called off. Exams and assessments that are part of scheduled education will still take place.
From midnight onwards, a code red warning issued by the KNMI will be in effect in eight Dutch provinces due to the expected extreme heat. The advice accompanying the warning is to “only go outside if absolutely necessary.”
The UvA has therefore decided to cancel regular teaching activities and all outdoor events on Friday. There are a limited number of exceptions, such as laboratory work and classes involving graduation presentations, so students are advised to check information provided by their programme. Exams, assessments that are part of scheduled teaching, PhD defences, inaugural lectures, and graduation ceremonies will go ahead as planned.
Staff members who do not have an essential role in one of the UvA’s buildings are advised to work from home on Friday.
