UvA Advice during Code Orange weather alert : “Drink water, take breaks, and look out for one another”

While many students are working hard on their final exams, the campuses are being hit by extreme heat. The UvA advises staff and students to “take good care of yourselves and one another”. Classes, exams, and research will continue as scheduled.

The KNMI has issued a code orange warning for extreme heat from Wednesday, June 24, through at least Friday, June 26. A heat protocol is in effect throughout the Netherlands.

The UvA does not have such a heat plan, and teaching, exams, and research will generally continue as scheduled, unless faculties decide otherwise. However, as of today, the UvA has posted advice on staying cool via a notice on the staff and student website. “Students are, of course, allowed to bring extra water into the exam room,” the spokesperson said.

Avoiding strenuous physical activity during the hottest part of the day

Flexibility Regarding Attendance Requirements
The UvA is following the general recommendations of the National Heat Plan issued by the RIVM, continues the spokesperson. “Drink plenty of water, take breaks more often, seek out cool places, and look out for one another.” The UvA also advises avoiding strenuous physical activity during the hottest part of the day and making use of cooler workspaces or working from home.

According to the UvA, however, the heat does constitute grounds for leniency. For example, the UvA is asking faculty and supervisors to “be lenient regarding the attendance requirement,” and employees should “feel free to work from home” if the situation calls for it. For instance, when children are dismissed from school early or the university is less accessible by public transportation. The university also recommends reconsidering planned outdoor activities.
