The Bushuis will be open to students on weekends during the exam period. This was announced by the Central Student Council (CSR) on Instagram. The student council had urged the UvA to provide additional study space due to the crowds in the new University Library during exam time.
The Bushuis, on Kloveniersburgwal, will open its doors to students during the weekend of the exam period that starts on May 22. This was announced by the Central Student Council (CSR) on Instagram. The council had requested the University of Amsterdam’s Executive Board (CvB) to make more study spaces available.
The reason for this is the congestion that is visible – especially during exam periods – in the new University Library on the Vendelstraat. When other campus locations are closed, the number of students in the UB quickly increases. Especially on weekends, it is already very crowded early on at the entrance for many students. In January, Folia already reported on student dissatisfaction about the crowds in the new University Library.
High occupancy rate
The “extremely high occupancy rate” that the University Library experiences during weekends was at least a point of concern for the student council. The CSR sent an unsolicited advice to the Executive Board (CvB) and asked the university to make more study spaces available. The council originally aimed for weekend opening of the P.C. Hoofthuis on Spuistraat, but according to the university board, the Bushuis is a more suitable location for practical reasons.
The CSR is pleased with the opening of the UvA building. “The Bushuis offers multiple study areas and sufficient rooms where you can focus on passing your exams, instead of worrying about finding a seat to sit on,” the council writes.
The UvA previously stated that it is “continuously monitoring and responding” to the availability of study spaces in the city centre.
