Since last week, all exterior windows in the J/K building on the Roeterseiland Campus have remained closed. With this pilot, the university aims to save energy: a more stable indoor temperature should reduce energy consumption.
Some windows in the J/K building had already been fixed shut for some time. Last week, the remaining windows were screwed shut. This is part of a pilot intended to reduce temperature fluctuations inside.
The UvA reported on its staff site that the indoor ventilation has been checked and is working properly. In addition, the university has invested in new blinds, which automatically lower when the sun shines. This should prevent rooms from becoming too warm, making it unnecessary to open the windows. Another drawback was that opening the windows could damage the newly installed blinds.
Despite the sunny weather, the blinds are not yet operational. In recent weeks, tests were carried out to see if the blinds were functioning.
In the coming period, the effects of these measures on the climate inside the J/K building and the users’ experience of the adjustments will be evaluated.
