Former dean of the Faculty of Law André Nollkaemper has been appointed temporary member of the Executive Board with effect from June 15. He will replace the ill chair of the Executive Board Edith Hooge and will remain in office until September 1.
In addition to replacing Hooge, Nollkaemper has also been appointed to bridge the period between the departure of vice-chair Jan Lintsen and the arrival of his successor Richard Goldstein. Rector magnificus Peter-Paul Verbeek will take over as chair of the Executive Board, combining this role with that of rector magnificus.
Nollkaemper has been University Professor of International Law and Sustainability at the UvA since January 1, 2024, and is the initiator of Seven, the UvA’s interfaculty climate institute. From 1998 to 2024, he was professor of international public law and also dean of the Faculty of Law from 2016 to 2024. Previously, he was director of the Amsterdam Center for International Law (ACIL), which he founded, and head of the international law department.
Through and through
Due to his other duties, Nollkaemper will serve on the Executive Board three days a week. “I am very pleased that André is willing to temporarily join the Executive Board despite his busy schedule as a university professor. He is an experienced and collegial administrator who knows the UvA through and through,” said Jolande Sap, chair of the Supervisory Board.
During his time as dean, Nollkaemper dealt with various issues, including the departure of labor law professor Ronald Belzer due to long-standing inappropriate behavior. There was also a discussion about the degree of independence of the tax law department, where several professors worked in the Zuidas business district. In the coming summer months, Nollkaemper will help to keep the pro-Palestinian demonstrations at the UvA on track.
