The 23-year-old Chinese UvA student Shengmen Luo, whose body was found in De Nieuwe Meer lake three weeks ago, did not die a criminal death, the police reported last week. The cause of his death remains a mystery to his family.
The family reports this to Folia. A family spokesperson says that there is still no final conclusion regarding the cause of death. “The police found no traces of a crime, but there is also no clear evidence of suicide. The case is therefore still open to us,” says family spokesperson Jian Fan Luo.
Disagreement
A police spokesperson says that there is a “difference of opinion” between the family and the investigation team about what could have happened. At the same time, the spokesperson says he is “no longer involved” in the case, which means that the case has been closed for the police. The spokesperson does want to mention that Shengmen’s bicycle has also been found. The police spokesperson does not say where.
According to the family, Shengmen’s body is still in the Netherlands “pending the completion of the necessary formalities”. Shengmen Luo, a master’s student of Logic, disappeared without a trace on 23 February, when he left his flat in West, leaving all his personal belongings behind, such as passport, bankcards en cellphone.
