Eligible students must apply for the basic scholarship themselves. They will not receive it automatically. The student finance company DUO plans to raise students’ awareness of this with a campaign and letters.

From September on, students can once again receive a basic scholarship consisting of €110 per month for students living at home and €275 per month for those living away from home. The latter will also receive an additional €164 next academic year due to high inflation.

Students must apply for this scholarship, which can be done beginning Monday, June 19, via MijnDUO. They will not automatically receive the money in their account. It is a loan, but repayment is waived if students graduate within 10 years.

How many years?

Students are entitled to a basic grant for the ‘nominal’ duration of their education. If it lasts four years, they are entitled to four years of the basic scholarship. Upperclassmen must deduct earlier years of study.

If you are now in the first year of a four-year program, you will still be entitled to a three-year basic grant. As a fourth-year student, you will miss out. If you begin a master's degree, you can apply for it again.

Gone for eight years

The basic scholarship was gone for eight years. The cabinet of the VVD and PvdA at the time eliminated it with support from D66 and GroenLinks. But the political winds have changed; yesterday the entire senate approved its reinstatement.

The ministry estimates that 435,000 students can take advantage of the new basic scholarship, including some 124,000 freshmen.
