The occupation of the P.C. Hoofthuis cost the UvA 89,000 euros, according to a statement issued by the university. The most significant cost was the hire of a locksmith.

A locksmith is the unlikely victor of the occupation of the P.C. Hoofthuis since it cost 49,625 euros to replace the building’s hinges and locks. This was necessary, says the university, because the key safe was damaged by the occupiers and some of the master keys had disappeared.

‘Catering costs,’ including the chocolate, damage to a computer and furniture, amounted to 3.106 euros

Another high cost (24,583) euros was for the hire of extra security on the day of the occupation and in the following three days. Cleaning costs totalled about six thousand euros.

Claim

In the days after the occupation, it transpired that the occupiers took Tony Chocolonely chocolate bars from the canteen of the P.C. Hoofthuis. ‘Catering costs,’ including the chocolate, damage to a computer and furniture, amounted to 3.106 euros. The UvA has filed a claim for damages with its insurance policy which says it will compensate the costs.

In February, a lawsuit will be brought against 27 of the occupants of the P.C. Hoofthuis. They are accused of local trespassing.
