This week, over thirty lectures at the UvA continue to be held outdoors at different locations in protest against ‘efficiency cuts’.

On Monday, professor of Cultural Sociology Giselinde Kuipers kicked things off with the first lecture at Roeterseiland. As students sat on benches in the sun, Kuipers, wearing a long coat with a small red square pinned to her lapel in sign of protest, addressed them from inside the tent. It was cultural sociologist Chip Huisman who was supposed to give the lecture, she said, but his daughter was born yesterday. She began. ‘What is good sociology? And why is it so difficult’?

‘I would hate to be outside in the cold’

Two male students pass. ‘I would hate to be outside in the cold.’ There’s no need to worry, says Maarten Kiers, vice president of student union ASVA. ‘We don’t want students to be at a disadvantage if they don’t want to attend so everything will be made available online on Canvas, the online learning environment of the UvA.’

The protest, an initiative of action group #woinactie in response to ‘efficiency cuts’ of 183 million euros, is nation-wide. The last lecture held in Amsterdam will be on Friday at 13:00 on the square in front of the Eye Film Museum.
