UvA lecturers to give lectures outdoors in protest

Teachers and professors at the UvA will give their lectures outdoors for one week in an act of protest against the much disputed ‘efficiency cuts’.

UvA professor Rens Bod is one of the initiators. He is not surprised that the 183 million euros worth of cutbacks is still on cards. ‘Of course we hoped that minister Van Engelshoven would change her mind, but I never thought it would actually happen. So we’re protestesting. From September 24 for a week, a group of us will hold all our lectures outside — both at the UvA and other universities.’

The UvA says it wants to help facilitate the lectures. ‘We are discussing our plans with the audiovisual service of the UvA, because the lectures have to carry on as they normally would indoors, on-screen presentations and all.’ Bod hopes to finalise the programme and locations this week.

The protect is an initiative of #woinactie,  an action group that advocates investment in higher education to reduce the workload of employees. The UvA board and hundreds of professors, researchers and teachers have joined the action group, which will join forces with Publieke Sector in Actie (Public Sector in Action) to broaden its support base. Together, they are planning a protest on the Malieveld in The Hague on 2 October. ‘It isn’t a strike’, says Bod. ‘We want to demonstrate with everyone in the public sector: police, school teachers, people who work in the army.’
