Student council against placing cap on Economics and Business courses

The Central Student Council is against placing a cap on the number of students to be accepted to the Faculty of Economics and Business for 2018-2019. Faculty Dean Han van Dissel proposed introducing a limit for the new bachelor Business Administration and Economics & Business Economics.

Together, more than 3.800 students applied for the two studies, but the Central Student Council thinks that limiting the number of students accepted is, ‘not in line with conversations we had with the Board of the University related to the university’s vision’.

Surprised
Faculty Dean Van Dissel is ‘very surprised’ about the council’s negative response, especially since the Faculty Student Council was positive. ‘Considering that more than five thousand students applied, I believe it would be irresponsible not to a place some sort of limit,’ he says.

Geert ten Dam, President of the Board of the University, says that, ‘student selection is a tool the UvA should be very careful using… [but the] increase in student numbers may require [such] measures if we’re to uphold the quality of our education.’

The Central Student Council has agreed to placing a cap on students accepted to Psychology courses but this, according to Chairman Alex Tess Rutten, was in the context of better communication with the Faculty Student Council and because of developments related to a new language policy. ‘We found that very important.’
