HvA students develop special guilt-free beer for after exercise

Three Sport, Management & Entrepreneurship students at the University of Applied Sciences (HvA) have developed a beer to drink after exercise, without feeling guilty.

‘Spils’, a combination of the words ‘sport’ and ‘pils’, Dutch slang for the word ‘beer’, has an alcohol percentage of only 2 per cent and contains nourishing food supplements. ‘When alcohol levels creep higher than 2 per cent, beer starts to have a dehydrating effect,’ says Merle Drommel (20) who developed the drink together with Zoï Alblas (21) and Sten Boehlé (21).

And dehydration is not what you want after an intensive work out. ‘The vitamins and minerals we added help replenish your muscles, but the drink still tastes (and looks) like normal beer!’ Drommel says.

Proteins

The students had also considered adding proteins before the brewer with whom they are collaborating advised against it. ‘He explained that protein is generally filtered out of beer, both to make it clear and to make it taste better.’

Spils can currently only be bought at the Mountain Network Amsterdam, but should soon be available at the various student sport associations. Until that time, you can also order Spils online.
