The municipality of Amsterdam has granted the UvA a permit to construct the temporary teaching building on the Roeterseiland Campus. Contractors have already started work on a building that must be in place by September 1.

Incidentally, it appears from the permit that interested parties can still lodge objections to the permit. A number of people living in the area have already announced that they will certainly do so, but for now the UvA is allowed to continue with the preparations for the construction. Construction workers have already started.

Construction workers told Folia that they had already been reprimanded by their backdoor neighbors

They have also started digging supply trenches for electrical cables and data cabling from building J/K to the place where the new temporary building will be built: the former small park Petit Versailles, also called Plot-V or REC-V. 'Temporary' is a loose concept here: the building can remain there for ten years.

Nuisance
The new REC-V educational building will consist of a container-like structure three stories high with an entrance on the Nieuwe Achtergracht. There will be eighteen classrooms for 30 people and six classrooms for 50 people, in total almost three thousand square meters of floor space.

Local residents, especially residents of Sarphatistraat and the Sarphatiblocks, are not very happy with the new building, which will obstruct their view of the Nieuwe Achtergracht for ten years and is now causing construction nuisance. Construction workers told Folia that they had already been reprimanded by their backdoor neighbors "because we started too early this morning and then they immediately hang up the phone. The intention is that the building will be taken into use on September 1.
