Several Russian students and a scientist in the Netherlands have been called asking about their loyalty in the Russian-Ukrainian war. The news is confirmed by universities and the Ministry of Education, Culture & Science.
The Russians received a phone call from someone who said he was from the Russian government. He wanted to know if they supported Russia's invasion of Ukraine, het Financieele Dagblad writes.
According to the universities, “several students and a scientist” received such a call. They refer these people to the intelligence service AIVD. “We advise reporting threats, but this is a grey area,” a spokesperson for universities association UNL says in the FD.
The Ministry of Education, Culture & Science calls the phone calls in the newspaper “very bad”. “For us, the most important thing is that students and researchers must be able to study and work safely and in freedom.”
400 scientists, 1,300 students
There are about four hundred Russian academics working at universities in the Netherlands. In addition, there are another 1,150 students enrolled at universities and about 150 at universities of applied sciences.
