Tuition fees for 2023 might increase by hundreds of euros

Tuition fees for the 2023/2024 academic year might increase by more than €200. For years, the increase in tuition fees has been linked to inflation, which is currently very high.

This year students were lucky. Because of the corona measures, the government halved tuition fees. For “only” €1,084 you could study this year. Next year you would pay the normal amount again, which has increased slightly, to €2,209. The year after, however, students should brace themselves for the largest increase in decades.

Energy prices

In June, the tuition fees for the following year are determined. The government bases these on the inflation rate in April. It is not yet clear how high inflation will be this month, but last month it was 9.7 percent. This is mainly due to high energy prices and the war in Ukraine. Inflation is expected to increase rather than decrease.

Tuition fees

Students from Netherlands or the European Economic Area (European Union plus Norway, Iceland & Liechtenstein) pay the regular tuition fee. International students from other countries pay the so-called institutional tuition fee, which can accumulate up to 20,000 euros per year. Universities can determine this institutional tuition fee by themselves. It is expected that this fee will increase sharp too.

A calculation by Folia shows that an inflation rate of 10 percent would mean that tuition fees will increase to €2,430 - an increase of over €200. That is about as much as the increase of the past six years combined.

The government may decide to cushion the increase in tuition fees, but it is not clear at this time whether it will do so. A spokesperson for the Ministry of Education, Culture & Science says that at the moment he cannot say how high the statutory tuition fees for 2023/2024 will be or whether the ministry will deviate from the usual calculation method. “The statutory tuition fee for that academic year will be set in June 2022.”

Basic grant

In 2023 the government wants to reinstate the basic grant. This will amount to €91 for students living at home and €255 for those living away from home. The monthly amount for students living away from home is about as high as the expected increase in tuition fees.
