The annual student council elections at the UvA have been postponed due to the corona outbreak. The elections were scheduled to take place in May, but have been postponed until the week of 8 June.

The committee deliberated over several options: to postpone elections until June or perhaps September, or reappoint the current councils according to the same seat allocation as this year. The final decision is that the elections will take place from 8 to 12 June. CSR chairman Pjotr van der Jagt: ‘In this way, the new councillors can train over summer’. Nominations will take place from 28 April to 7 May with candidate lists submitted electronically. The results will be announced on 19 June.

The UvA student council elections have been suffering from a lack of interest for years. An average of only 20 per cent of students use their right to vote, and it is increasingly difficult to find new candidates. Now it may be even harder. Recruitment of candidates has always taken place on campus, all of which have been empty for the last few weeks due to the coronavirus and with students only due to return after (at least) 1 June.
