UvA wants to build thousands of student houses in Almere

In its latest effort to reduce the housing shortage, the UvA hopes to build three thousand extra student houses in Almere within two to three years.

Spokesperson for housing development at the UvA Hans den Boer says the city of Almere is interested in the proposal as part of a bid to ‘attract young people and create a bit of excitement in the city.’ For the UvA, the city of Almere is interesting for its location—even though this is a 30 kilometer drive from Amsterdam. ‘International students have a different perspective to the Dutch. For them, Almere is more or less around the corner. And public transport connections are fine,’ says Den Boer.

As it stands, the UvA will not pay for the housing but work with different parties. In the future he imagines the UvA will invest in the city by creating study places. The UvA hopes to sign a contract next year after which it and a partner will have to find and purchace land and send the plans to the city council for further consideration. Despite the work ahead, Den Boer is positive. He hopes that the first student accomodation will be ready within two or three years and says the housing will be ‘affordable’.

In the past, the UvA has considered student housing in neighboring cities such as  Zaanstad and Purmerend.
