During the annual dies natalis of the UvA, Louis Andriessen, composer and professor at Leiden University, will be awarded an honorary doctorate for his innovative work as a composer.

Andriessen is perhaps best known as one of the founders of the Haagse School, a musical movement that shakes the notion of classical music to its foundations. He is also the composer of De Staat, a minimalist piece that is largely considered one of the most important post-war works.

Professor of theatre studies and honorary promotor Kati Röttger states that Andriessen is ‘very important for the performing arts and its scientific study because of his development of the concept of works of art as an theoretical object’. Professor of musicology Julia Kursell says he has played an ‘essential role in music’, not only in the Netherlands, but also worldwide.

Rector magnificus Karen Maex believes Andriessen is ‘an inspiration for many’ and is thankful that he has been regularly involved in UvA projects, both in research and education. ‘That is why I am extremely proud on behalf of the UvA to award Louis Andriessen an honorary doctorate.’
