UvA Faculty of Science re-introduces MacGillavry Fellowship for female researchers

The Faculty of Science at the UvA is to re-introduce the MacGillavry Fellowship to stimulate gender diversity. ‘We will invite the most talented female researchers for a research position in 2019.’

The Faculty of Science introduced the MacGillavry Fellowship in 2010 as a measure to boost female researchers but considered the drive for gender diversity no longer necessary by 2014. This December the recruitment campaign will re-launch to find the best female research talent. There are six positions available.

‘In the long term, we hope these programmes will no longer be necessary to stimulate gender diversity’

‘We would like to see more female academic staff,’ says dean Peter van Tienderen. ‘We have tried to implement this goal in our regular staff policy, but it takes too much time to get results.’ The MacGillavry Fellowship is a great way to stimulate gender diversity, he says. ‘Female scientists are encouraged to apply, but individuals can also be scouted by the different faculties. This element is also very important’.

The successful researchers will receive a temporary appointment in 2019 with the prospect of a permanent appointment for a total of four to five years. After this, it will be up to them to secure funding by other research institutes. ‘In the long term, we hope these programmes will no longer be necessary to stimulate gender diversity in the faculty.’

Carolina Henriette

The McGillavry Fellowship is named after Carolina Henriette MacGillavry, a chemist who studied at the UvA, graduated cum laude and became a professor. In 1950 she became the first female member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences.
