Delegate of faculty council appointed CSR chairman

Roeland Voorbergen, delegate of the Student Council of the Faculty of Humanities in the Central Student Coucil (CSR) is — uniquely — also the new CSR chairman.

CSR consist of 14 members, seven of which are elected directly by UvA students and seven of which are delegates; one from each faculty student council. The chair of the CSR is usually filled by one of the councils seven diretly elected memers. Not this time however. Roeland Voorbergen (student party Tof) is a delegate — he represents the humanities students in the CSR — but now also chairman.

Roeland, congratulations. Your chairmanship is already unique.

‘Yes, it is unusual if you look at the past few years. But the reverse is true, too. I’m not only a unique chairman, but also a unique faculty student council member. I won’t be able to spend as much time on those duties as my colleagues.’

Would it not have been more logical to apply for the CSR if you wanted to be chairman?

‘I was elected at faculty level and had my doubts as to whether I wanted to become board member of the faculty council or a delegate in the CSR…. In the end I opted for the latter. I think the CSR can do a lot for the faculty representative body.’

Was is difficult to gather support?

‘Actually I thought that UvASociaal, which has four of the seven direct mandates, would deliver the chairman but I applied anyway. I had faith that the councilors would vote for the best candidate. The most important thing is that tremds from election restuls will reflect in the person of chairman. I’m not a UvaSociaal member, but I do have sympathy for the position of the party.’
