The Roeterseilandcampus (REC) was nominated for the RIBA International Award 2018, an award of the British architectural guild. This year, 62 architectural companies from 29 countries will participate.
The RIBA International Prize 2018 is awarded to a building for its exceptional design, architectural ambition and social impact. The buildings that make up the law faculty at the REC (the A, B C and D buildings) were entered as a nomination. Together they form one design, created by the British architectural firm Allford Hall Monaghan Morris. The E-building was built in the nineties by architect Pi de Bruijn.
A delegation of the architectural firm has guided the jury during a tour at the REC. Members of the jury include the American architect Elizabeth Dille, her colleague Joshua Bolchover (Hongkong) and the British choreographer Wayne McGregor. The winner will be announced in May.
Two years ago, the first RIBA International Award was awarded for a university building. This was the Universidad de Ingeniería y Tecnología in the Peruvian capital Lima designed by architectural firm Grafton Architects.
André Nollkaemper, dean of the Faculty of Law, was initially quite skeptical about moving the faculty from the Oudemanhuispoort to the REC but is now lyrical. ‘Building A [where he has an office] is fantastic. It contains modern and classical elements and with its the view of the city, it emphasises the mission of the Amsterdam Law School: we want to connect with the city of Amsterdam.’
