The ‘Binnenstadscampus’ to be renamed to ‘Universiteitskwartier’

First, it was ‘Binnengasthuisterrein’, then ‘Binnenstadscampus.’ Now, the university campus that stretches between Oudemanhuispoort and the Nieuwe Doelenstraat will have yet another name.

In a press statement, the UvA states that the name ‘Universiteitskwartier (University Quarter)’ better expresses the connection between the university and city. It hopes to also better reflect the expectations and wishes of locals, as well as being ‘easier to translate into English’ it says.

Of the four UvA campuses, only one is actually called a campus: the Roeterseilandcampus. The UvA has divided education and research across the University Quarter, Science Park and the AMC. The University Quarter will spend its first years as a campus under construction, due for completion in 2025.

The UvA will build a new university library in the monumental buildings of the former Binnengasthuis. The Oudemanhuispoort will be used temporarily for student housing before it beachmes the new home of scholars of the Faculty of Humanities.
