UvA at the bottom of Keuzegids poll

The UvA placed at the bottom of the Keuzegids poll of Dutch universities. In particular its Economics, Rights & Management and Earth & Environment studies received low scores.

The Keuzegids is an annual ranking of the fourteen biggest universities in the Netherlands. The UvA and the VU have for years been locked neck and neck trying to escape the bottom, but this year the VU is the clear winner, having climbed to tenth place together with TU Delft and Universiteit Leiden (all three awarded 57,7 points). The UvA came in last with 53,3 points. ‘The UvA struggles with a messy organisation, mediocre facilities, dissatisfaction among students and the lowest rate of study success in the country,’ according to the Keuzegids editors.

Critics of the guide point out that it makes no mention of the fact that bigger universities tend to score significantly worse than smaller ones which, with the UvA as the largest in the country, could partially explain its low score. The best university is also the smallest; Wageningen University (76 points). Furthermore, as the Keuzegids compiles scores from the Association of Universities (Vereniging van Universiteiten), Studiekeuze123 and the National Student Poll (Nationale Studenten Enquête), it makes it difficult for students to compare quality of education and the facilities of the different universities.

Small differences
UvA spokesperson Yasha Lange says of the ranking: ‘Of course we’re not happy with the result. But the differences between the universities are small. The UvA scores an average of 4,03 in the National Student Poll. The average of the other universities is 4,09.’ He also points out that the UvA is working on improving those areas in which it scores low, like study guidance and preparing students for the labour market.
