UvA and Duwo to build student apartments in Oudemanhuispoort

Together with student housing organisation Duwo, the UvA is to build 190 temporary student rooms in the Oudemanshuispoort (OMHP) building.

The first hundred rooms should be ready by next summer, with another ninety to follow by September 2018. Building will begin as soon as the municipality of Amsterdam has granted the permit to do so.

The rooms at the OMHP will have shared kitchens and bathroom facilities, says Hans den Boer from the UvA’s housing office. They will be available to students for four years after which the Faculty of Humanities is scheduled to move into the building.

Cheap

Rent will be cheap for Amsterdam standards, with rooms starting at 200 euros a month and with an average of 340 euros a month. Anyone registered with the Studentenwoningweb can apply for a room, and UvA students will not receive preferential treatment says Den Boer.

Amsterdam is struggling with a severe shortage in student housing, with reports of multiple international students having to share a single room this semester common. UvA board member Jan Lintsen regards the temporary vacancy of the OMHP as a ‘possibility for the UvA to do something about the shortage ourselves’.

Ever since the Faculty of Law moved to the Roeterseilandcampus this summer, the OMHP has only occasionally been used for classes. Otherwise it stands mostly vacant.
