One in four UvA first year students is international

The UvA saw an increase of 14 per cent in first year students from last year, caused by an 82 per cent rise in international students.

In 2017, 6,271 first year students enrolled at the UvA of which about a quarter is from abroad.

 

70 per cent of international students is from the European Union, while 15 per cent is from Asia. Almost every faculty saw an increase of first year students except for the Faculty of Science, which saw a decrease of 2 per cent.


English majors

The Faculty of Economics & Business leads with a 52 per cent increase of first year students, largely due to its new English language majors attracting 80 per cent of new students. The Faculty of Economics & Business has the most international students in total, with 635 starting their studies at the faculty this year.

 

The number of master’s students enrolled at the university has remained stable, with only a 1 per cent increase. The Humanities and Medicine master’s programmes are more popular, while Economics and Business saw a decrease in student registrations.

 

The total number of students enrolled at the UvA has grown with 5 per cent, the biggest increase in years.
