Fashion icon Frans Ankoné quits Amfi

After thirteen years of organising its honours programme, Frans Ankoné (70) has quit the Amsterdam Fashion Institute (Amfi) in order to travel and focus on other projects: ‘It’s time for the younger generation to take over.’

Besides his work for Amfi, Ankoné worked as a stylist for the Dutch fashion magazine Avenue and for designer Romeo Gigli. He was also art director for the German Vogue, visual director for New York Times Magazine and a board member of the Dutch Fashion Week.

Ankoné concedes that he is ‘one of those lucky people who are asked to join projects instead of having to go through interviews.’ Such was the case with Amfi, too. Excited to build a new educational module, Ankoné accepted the job. He taught the honours programme together with Amfi teachers Peter Leferink and Martine Heinen, helping students to discover their own style. ‘I saw myself more as someone there to inspire rather than as a teacher,’ he says.

Luxurious
Ankoné looks back on his Amfi years with fondness. ‘It was all very luxurious, especially in the beginning. We went to Milan for three weeks, then to Paris for two.’

But now 70-year-old Ankoné is moving on, and is excited to have more time to travel and focus on other projects. He hopes that the module will continue to exist. ‘It helps students to find their own path in fashion. My goal was to get students as enthusiastic as possible. They have to breathe fashion, in and out.’

Ankoné’s Instagram is full of pictures where he jumps in places around the world:
