UvA at the bottom of Elsevier poll, HvA in the middle

For the first time in years, the UvA came in last in the ‘Best Study Programmes’-poll conducted by Dutch magazine Elsevier. The Vrije Universiteit, which routinely ranks at the bottom, was higher than the UvA this year.

Students gave the UvA a less than stellar score. Though it scored a +1.7 last year on a scale of 100 to -100, the university has now plunged to a -21.3 score. The VU, which was in last place in previous years, has now risen to 5th place in a list with six non-specialised universities scoring -14.9. The University of Utrecht ranks the highest there, scoring +16.6. Wageningen University has the highest overall score with +63.2.

Just like the ‘Keuzegids’, released earlier this week, Elsevier primarily uses the National Student Poll (Nationale Studenten Enquête, NSE) and public records of ‘admission requirements, revenue, “switchers”, the student population and the cost of a second study’.

11th out of 16

It’s notable that the HvA, which ranked last in the Keuzegids for the first time, does relatively well in the Elsevier poll. With a score of -14.3, it ranks 11th out of 16 HBO colleges, above the other major universities of applied sciences in the Randstad. Just like in the Keuzegids, the poll is dominated by Avans Hogescholen, which scores +64.9.
