‘British students should pay same tuition as Dutch despite Brexit’

A group of UvA researchers from the Amsterdam Centre for European Law and Governance argue that in spite of the U.K. leaving the European Union, its students should still pay the same rate as European citizens.

It is expected that British students will soon have to pay ‘full’ tuition fees (14,740 euros) to study at the UvA, because of Brexit. That amount is considerably higher than the rate of around 2,000 euros paid by citizens from The Netherlands, other member states, Suriname and those with a residence permit.

The researchers further warn of the dangers of the U.K. opting out of the European exchange initiative, the Erasmus Programme, citing the negative impact this would have on the number of Dutch students eligible to study in the U.K., and stress the importance of Britain remaining an active participant of the programme.

British and Dutch relations

In fear of souring relations between British and Dutch universities, the researchers have urged Dutch institutions to contest the expected rise in fees, for example by talking to government officials in The Hague or by making up the deficit themselves.

Kim Janssen, a spokesperson for the UvA, says that the research group’s suggestions cannot be acted upon just yet. ‘We must wait for the conclusion of Brexit talks in Brussels before we can take any action.’
