16 parties strive for a place on UvA’s central students’ council

In the coming week, students can elect their representatives in the Central Students’ Council at the University of Amsterdam. A total of 16 parties and 71 candidates are on the ballot.

The Central Students’ Council is one of the most important advisory councils to the Board of Directors. It’s their task to agree on the university’s budget, and they have a voice in determining the rules concerning the organisation of education, such as exam regulations.

Twenty million
Members can also use their influence to block important decisions. Earlier this month, a joint assembly of the Students’ and Workers’ Council decided to vote against the planned move of the UvA research department to the VU campus. The move was estimated to cost about 20 million euros, an investment that would be ‘too risky’ according to the assembly’s chairman, Alex Tess Rutten.

Earlier this year the council refused to accept the new UvA budget due to similar concerns.

Merger
The council played an important role in the decision making on the UvA-HvA de-merger. Another important question last year was whether the UvA could go along with its plan to allow some students to pay tuition per credit instead of per year.

Until Tuesday 16 May students can vote both for representatives at a central level and for the delegates of their respective faculties. Students can also vote for the councils at their respective faculties.
