Youssef El Bouhassani awarded HvA Teacher of the Year

Bart Lichtenveldt,
6 april 2017 - 12:16

Youssef El Bouhassani (31) was named Teacher of the Year 2017 at the Education Conference of the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences (HvA).

Rector Huib de Jong praised El Bouhassani, who teaches Aviation, Mathematics & Statistics. for his enthusiasm and charisma. ‘By using social media and movie clips during his lectures, he places himself right next to his students,’ said De Jong. El Bouhassani sees himself as being on the same team as his students, he says. Both figuratively and literally: sometimes he’ll find himself playing table football with them.

El Bouhassani says it is an honour to accept the award: ‘Especially since I haven’t been teaching for very long’. And although he isn’t sure how best to spend the two thousand euros prize money, he does know that he wants it to benefit both his students and his colleagues.

Lubna Medema-Barroud of the Faculty of Applied Social Sciences and Law received second place, while Corinne van der Velden of the faculty of Digital Media and Creative Industries received third place. They too were awarded prize money: one thousand, and five hundred euros respectively.

The Education Conference is a yearly event held by and for the HvA. The theme this year was ‘inclusion and diversity,’ a message introduced by Jörgen Tjon A Fong at the start of the morning when he told the audience: ‘Our differences shouldn’t get our way when working together, but instead enhance our relationships and results’. The programme for the rest of the day followed this theme with many master classes, workshops and talks, followed by a festive conclusion at the Kohnstammhuis.
