Huib de Jong likely to be reappointed for second term as rector of HvA

There is a significant chance that Huib de Jong, whose term as HvA rector will expire on March 1, will be reappointed for a second term. De Jong has himself given notice that he would like to be reappointed, and the Central Participation Council (CMR) seems to be in support.

By Tuesday February 28 it should become clear whether De Jong (62) will be reappointed or not. On February 6, when asked by the Supervisory Board (RvT) of the HvA to present its advice on the matter, the CMR responded with a notice of its intention to reappoint De Jong ‘for a period of four years’.

Positive advice

CMR chairman Pieter Claeys informed Folia last Monday by telephone that the CMR still has some questions about the reappointment but that, ‘these questions are largely procedural and judicial’. Folia, however, is in possession of a letter dated February 17 and signed by Claeys,  singling that the CMR agrees with the reappointment. It reads: ‘We grant our consent for the reappointment of De Jong.’ The central workers council (COR) and the central student council (CSR) of the UvA also have the right to give advice on the reappointment.

Willem Baumfalk

Meanwhile there is another governance matter to be resolved at the HvA: the search for a new Chief Financial Officer (CFO) to replace interim CFO Nico Moolenaar. The dean of the Faculty Business and Economics, Willem Baumfalk, had submitted his interest for the post but has since been voted against by the majority of the CMR. Baumfalk: ‘It is a public secret that I was interested in fulfilling the post, but upon further discussion with the CMR, it became evident there was a wide misunderstanding between us that resulted in a negative advise on my appointment. I have since withdrawn my candidacy and the HvA must continue its search for a new CFO.’
