Students find solution for bicycle parking problem at Roeterseiland

Three students from the University of Applied Sciences (HvA) believe they have found a solution for the bicycle parking problem at the University Campus of Roeterseiland.

Whereas the underground parking lot besides the campus building stands largely empty, the outside pavement is littered with bikes. After the failed attempt of ‘bicycle coaches,’ dispatched in order to help instil some form of order, the UvA has asked HvA students to come up with a solution.

Out of the five teams of students who took up the challenge, Kelvin van Amstel, Evita Zethof and Tim Maas have been declared winners of the competition with their famous city theme styled solution. To make the underground parking lot more attractive, the three suggested transforming it into a ‘little piece of Paris’ or New York or any other famous metropolis’.

‘We foresee this working really well because of the international personality of the UvA,’ says Van Amstel. With the help of projectors, the now sober walls of the parking lot will display photos of famous scenes around the world. The bicycle coaches can also take part in the make believe, welcoming cyclists with ‘Bonjour!’ and a piece of French bread. The UvA has said it will look into the feasibility of the idea.
